It is typically deep-fried whole until it’s crispy on the outside while remaining juicy and tender on the inside. Fresh herbs, lettuce, and other greens often accompany the dish. With this dish, a tangy dipping sauce, usually made with fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, and garlic, is also required.

Vietnam’s Weather and Top Destinations to Explore in May

Despite the complex weather patterns, May is still a great time to visit Vietnam. As a transitional month between spring and summer, the country experiences increased rainfall and rising temperatures. In Hanoi and northern Vietnam, the heat and humidity start to build, accompanied by more frequent showers—yet the weather remains comfortable enough for outdoor activities. Along the central coast, hot and sunny days make it one of the best regions to explore during this time. Meanwhile, southern Vietnam begins its gradual shift into the rainy season. Let’s take a closer look at the weather and top destinations to visit in Vietnam during May.

(Source: Collected)

1.Weather by Region in May.

1.1 Northern Vietnam

Popular destinations: Hanoi, Halong Bay, Cat Ba, Sapa, Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai, Ninh Binh, Mai Chau, etc.

Halong Bay(Source: Collected)

May in northern Vietnam marks a pleasant shift into summer, with temperatures typically ranging from 24 to 36 degrees Celsius. It’s an excellent time to visit both the northern and central regions of the country. However, travelers should be prepared for occasional weather disruptions, including storms or tropical depressions that may lead to changes in plans, such as canceled boat tours in Ha Long Bay. The mountainous areas like Mu Cang Chai and Sapa enjoy comfortable weather during this period, as local hill tribes begin planting rice on the terraced fields. In contrast, Ha Giang, located further east, tends to experience heavier rainfall. Despite this, May remains a wonderful time to explore Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

1.2 Central Vietnam

Popular destinations: Hoian, Danang, Hue, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Dalat, etc.

Ba Na Hills(Source: Collected)

May brings some of the best weather to Central Vietnam, with sunshine dominating the forecast and minimal rainfall to disrupt outdoor activities. Temperatures rise steadily, often reaching the upper 20s to as high as 38°C (upper 80s to 100°F). This hot, dry climate makes it a perfect time to enjoy the beaches of Da Nang, Hoi An, and Nha Trang. With long, sunny days, it’s an ideal month for snorkeling, diving, or simply relaxing by the sea. Just be sure to prepare for the heat—pack light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat to stay comfortable.

1.3 Southern Vietnam

Popular destinations: Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Mekong Delta, Long Hai & Ho Tram, Con Dao & Phu Quoc, etc.

Phan Thiet & Mui Ne(Source: Collected)

In May, South Vietnam begins its transition into the rainy season, though the change is gradual and mild. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Temperature: Expect hot and humid days with highs ranging from 28 to 36 degrees Celsius (82 to 97 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Rainfall: While the rainy season technically starts in May, the rain usually comes in short, afternoon bursts. You’ll still enjoy plenty of sunshine.
  • Humidity: Humidity levels hover between 60-70%, making it feel even warmer.

Overall, May remains a great time to visit South Vietnam. The occasional rain showers offer a refreshing break from the heat and are unlikely to cause major disruptions to your travel plans.

2. Places to go in Vietnam in May & Useful Tips.

With average temperatures ranging from 20 to 30°C, the Mu Cang Chai and Sapa regions remain mostly dry, making them ideal for trekking. In particular, the terraced rice fields of northern Vietnam are at their most stunning during this time. May marks the “falling water season,” when fresh water cascades from one terrace to the next, and the fields shimmer with vibrant green and golden hues from the new rice crop.

Sapa(Source: Collected)

Best known for its vibrant “butterfly season” in April and May, Cuc Phuong National Park is an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure-seeking travelers.

Protected by the Truong Son mountain range, Central Vietnam experiences significantly less rainfall in May compared to other regions of the country. It’s an excellent time to visit its beautiful beaches, such as the pristine white sands of Nha Trang, the calm, warm waters of Quy Nhon, or the more secluded Lang Co Bay. Additionally, combining beach time with cultural exploration in Hue and Hoi An—both UNESCO World Heritage Sites—would make for an unforgettable experience.

The South is known for its hot, humid weather and frequent rainfall, but it enjoys slightly cooler temperatures compared to previous months. Therefore, visiting Ho Chi Minh City’s main attractions and air-conditioned museums remains a great option.

The island in South – Con Dao is still in favorable diving conditions during this month. Don’t miss it.

Con Dao(Source: Collected)

As the hot, rainy season approaches, with increased rainfall across the country throughout the month, it’s essential to pack rain gear, insect repellent, and summer clothing. Don’t forget to bring a sunhat, sunglasses, or a parasol to shield yourself from UV rays. If you’re heading to mountainous regions or the Central Highlands, make sure to include a couple of warm layers for the cooler early mornings and late nights.

At the start of the month, during the April 30-May 2 holiday, city dwellers often head out of town for a quick getaway, making it a busy time, particularly at the beaches. However, later in the month, you can still enjoy the best beaches under glorious sunshine, but without the earlier crowds. Another advantage of May is that tour prices and accommodation rates tend to drop, or are more negotiable, making it an ideal time to visit.

Hue ancient capital is the host of National Tourism Year 2025.

The National Tourism Year 2025 in Vietnam is being hosted by Hue, according to the People’s Committee of Huế City. The year-long event, which kicked off in March 2025, aims to revitalize tourism, attract both international and domestic visitors, and generate significant revenue. The theme for the National Tourism Year in Hue is “Ancient Capital, New Destiny”.

The event is significant for Hue in its journey towards sustainable development based on preserving and promoting the values of the ancient capital’s heritage and cultural identity.

Getting ready for Visit Vietnam Year 2025

Hue has already established the organising committee for the Visit Vietnam Year 2025, with five subcommittees of Finance – Sponsorship, Content – Technique, Communications, Protocol – Logistics, and Security – Health – Environment.

The highlight will be the opening ceremony on March 25 evening, featuring a special semi-realistic stage along the Huong River. Beyond an artistic programme, the opening night will be a feast of music and light showcasing the cultural identities of regions across the country. It will bring together cultural excellence performed by over 800 artists and international art troupes from China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and Uzbekistan. Preparations have been nearly completed, promising captivating fireworks displays, drone shows, LED effects, water illuminations, and paragliding demonstrations.

Throughout the Visit Vietnam Year 2025, 75 major national and international events will take place in Hue, comprising the Spring Festival “Spring in the Ancient City, Summer Festival “Shining Imperial City”, Autumn Festival “Hue in Autumn”, and Winter Festival “Winter in Hue”.

According to Director of the municipal Department of Tourism Tran Thi Hoai Tram, with the event, the city is expecting to welcome 5.25-5.5 million tourist arrivals this year and gain 11-12 trillion VND (430.4 – 470 million USD).

Hue currently has 887 lodging facilities with some 14,000 rooms, distributed across various types from resort hotels and apartments to tourist villas, guest houses, and homestays. The demand for 3-5 star rooms is particularly high during peak periods. To ensure tourists have a complete holiday experience, most coastal facilities have joined hands with travel agencies and selected group contracts to maintain a steady flow of guests.

Determined for tourism breakthrough

The Visit Vietnam Year 2025 presents opportunities for the local tourism sector’s comprehensive development.

Hue boasts significant potential for tourism and service development thanks to its heritage advantages, landscapes, craft villages, and diverse tourism products. However, the products, small in scale, are not yet truly attractive and only meet a small portion of the tourism market.

Against the backdrop, the city will reposition its products, making them align with the market trends, adjust policies to attract investors, and pay due attention to promoting local images on national and international media. Additionally, a focus will be channeled to green and smart tourism that leverages cultural heritage as well as improvement in the quality and quantity of accommodations.

Travel businesses will develop additional high-quality, professional products in health care and golf services. New and creative services tied to local advantages revolving around distinctive brands such as “Hue – Ao Dai Capital”, “Hue – Culinary Capital”, “Hue – Festival City”. Notably, realistic performances, Ao Dai shows, and arts associated with heritage and Hue royal court music will become regular tourism products of the city, according to Tram.

With several potential markets for Hue tourism like the Netherlands, East Asia, and India, local leaders said it is necessary to develop suitable tourism products and innovate promotion methods. International flight routes are being connected to bring tourists to Hue, including linkages with Da Nang International Airport and policies supporting guest transport from Da Nang to Hue. Additionally, the city will continue developing cruise tourism and establishing service infrastructure in Chan May port area in Phu Loc district to welcome high-end international visitors.

Hue plans to launch a new product, in which AI applications can help tourists identify suitable tours, attractions, and services when visiting Hue simply by scanning a QR code. Heritage sites and attractions will also apply AI technology to support tourists in sightseeing and experiencing local culture.

Since March 1, Viet Nam waived visa with a duration of stay of up to 45 days for citizens of Poland, Czechia, and Switzerland traveling on package tours, adding to a list of 25 countries enjoying visa-free entry.

Viet Nam has issued e-visa to citizens of all countries and territories around the world and increase the validity duration to up to 90 days.

Phu Quoc sets world record for ‘Kiss of the Sea’ show

The “Kiss of the Sea” show in Phu Quoc was recognized the “Largest permanent water projection theater” by the Guinness World Records organization on April 23.

This is the first time an outdoor theater in Vietnam has achieved a Guinness World Record and the second Guinness title awarded to Phu Quoc, following the record for the world’s longest three-wire cable car previously set by the Hon Thom Cable Car.

>>> Apply Visa to Vietnam <<<

>>> Order Fast Track Service <<<

The “Largest permanent water projection theater” was awarded based on two key criteria.

First, the theater boasts a seating capacity of 5,108, surpassing other outdoor multimedia performance venues featuring water projection globally. This capacity is two to three times larger than similar shows such as “Wings of Time” (Sentosa, Singapore, 2,500 seats) and “Legend of Pangu” (Lanzhou, China, 1,500 seats).

Second, the stage features a large-scale, permanent, and dedicated water projection screen exclusively used for a single nightly show. Its water screen stands 23 meters high and 44 meters wide, providing a projection surface of up to 920 sq.m.

This Guinness World Record marks a new milestone in the success of “Kiss of the Sea”, the first large-scale multimedia show in Phu Quoc. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Director of Sun World Hon Thom, the show’s operator, stated that this recognition by Guinness World Records is a proud achievement not only for Sun Group but also for Phu Quoc tourism and Vietnam. “We believe this award will further elevate “Kiss of the Sea” as a signature entertainment experience and an international event venue, contributing to Phu Quoc’s ambition of becoming a leading regional hub for arts and entertainment.”

The show is the result of a collaboration between Sun Group and ECA2, a French creative studio known for legendary productions such as the 1998 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony in Paris, the Eiffel Tower Millennium Celebration in 2000, and over 60 multimedia shows across 17 countries.

With a total investment of VND1.6 trillion (US$61.5 million), “Kiss of the Sea” was not only designed to impress but also to set records. At the show’s premiere in Phu Quoc, Jean-Christophe Canizarès, CEO of ECA2, said that this is the largest open-sea show in Asia, and possibly in the world, that ECA2 has ever created. “The scale of this project is reflected in every aspect, from architecture and engineering to creative design and production processes.”

Emmanuelle Charotte, ECA2’s Deputy Director of Business Development, also emphasized the cutting-edge technologies used in the show, highlighting its status as the world’s first stage to feature three continuous projection domes. This unique setup creates an exceptional sense of depth and immersive visuals.

Thanks to ECA2’s direction, “Kiss of the Sea” offers a dazzling artistic journey where stories of love, the ocean, and humanity are told through a symphony of light, water, fire, fireworks, music, live performance, and high-tech visuals. The nightly fireworks display, in particular, has earned Phu Quoc the nickname “the 365 Days of Fireworks Island.”

With this new Guinness title, Phu Quoc reaffirms its place as one of the region’s and the world’s most attractive destinations. This milestone also highlights the strategic vision and significant contributions of Sun Group in shaping Phu Quoc’s tourism identity and elevating its global presence with iconic projects.

In a significant recognition of their commitment to cleanliness, waste management, and environmental awareness, three enchanting Vietnamese destinations – Hue, Vung Tau, and Quy Nhon – have been honored with the prestigious ASEAN Clean Tourist City Awards 2024. The announcement took place at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024, held in the picturesque capital of Laos, Vientiane, from January 22 to 27, 2024. This accolade not only celebrates the beauty and cultural richness of these destinations but also highlights their dedication to sustainable tourism practices.

These three places have previously received the ASEAN Clean Tourism City Award. Quy Nhon received the honor in 2020, while Vung Tau and Hue had each received it three times before.

Huế: Preserving Imperial Grandeur with Cleanliness

The city has seamlessly blended its historical charm with a modern commitment to cleanliness and sustainability. From the well-preserved citadel to the vibrant markets, Hue has become a shining example of a destination that values both its rich heritage and the environment. Vũng Tàu: Where Pristine Beaches Meet Environmental Consciousness

Vũng Tàu, a coastal gem with stunning beaches and panoramic views, has been recognized for its pristine landscapes and a dedication to environmental preservation. The city’s authorities have implemented innovative waste management systems and initiatives to ensure the cleanliness of its beaches and public spaces. Vung Tau’s recognition at the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Awards is a testament to its commitment to providing a delightful and sustainable experience for both locals and tourists.

Quy Nhơn: Balancing Natural Beauty and Environmental Responsibility

Quy Nhơn, known for its tranquil beaches and pristine landscapes, has struck the perfect balance between preserving its natural beauty and promoting environmental responsibility. The city’s efforts in waste management and environmental education have not gone unnoticed, earning it a well-deserved place among the recipients of the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Awards. Quy Nhon stands as a model destination that demonstrates how responsible tourism can enhance the allure of a place without compromising its ecological integrity.

The ASEAN Clean Tourist City Awards 2024 have cast a spotlight on three remarkable Vietnamese destinations – Hue, Vung Tau, and Quy Nhon – for their dedication to cleanliness, waste management, and environmental awareness. These cities not only showcase the diverse beauty of Vietnam but also serve as inspiring examples for other destinations aiming to harmonize tourism with sustainability. As Hue, Vung Tau, and Quy Nhon continue to welcome visitors with open arms, their commitment to a cleaner and greener future will undoubtedly make them even more appealing to travelers seeking responsible and enriching experiences.

Tourists enjoy cannon firing rehearsal in Ho Chi Minh City ahead of April 30 celebration

A cannon fire rehearsal on Monday to prepare for the celebration of 50 years of Vietnam’s reunification on April 30 drew many locals and tourists alike.

>>> Apply Visa to Vietnam <<<

Soldiers from the 96th Brigade under the Artillery Corps practiced firing cannons at Bach Dang Wharf at 8 a.m. Monday. The troops were divided into groups and practiced firing 21 salutes in turn.

15 105-mm ceremonial cannons, each weighing about 4 tons, were brought to the area from Dong Nai Province the day before.

The ceremonial artillery team consists of 233 officers and soldiers of Brigade 96.

The artillery site was divided into five platoons with each team consisting of three guns and each gun guarded by three people.

The ammunition used in the performance contains ball propellant, which burns quickly and cleanly and produces minimal white smoke instead of black smoke when fired.

The area from Bach Dang Wharf to the Saigon River bank was fenced off, with locals and tourists observing from behind the barrier, approximately 4 meters away.

When the practice ended, many people posed for photos with the cannons.

The cannons were arranged in straight lines and set on flat surfaces to produce a uniform sound when fired.

Outside was a fence with 250 posts and carpets stretching about 90 meters long.

The cannon salute is part of a larger program that includes aerial displays and a grand parade to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam’s reunification on April 30.

A parade to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam’s reunification will begin in downtown Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of April 30.

The procession starting at the intersection of Le Duan and Nguyen Binh Khiem streets would go past the Independence Palace and continue through various District 1 streets, Vo Ho Hoang Vu, chief of office of the city Department of Culture and Sports, said.

The main grandstand will be set up in front of the Independence Palace, with the festivities starting at 6:30 a.m.

The 13,000 personnel, from the military, militia, police, and mass organizations, will march past the grandstand and then split into four separate routes to reach their designated assembly points.

The first will go along Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Le Loi and Nguyen Thi Nghia streets and past the Phu Dong Thien Vuong roundabout, and end at Tao Dan Park.

The second route will take them along Le Duan, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Le Thanh Ton, and Nguyen Hue streets, passing the Me Linh roundabout and ending at Bach Dang Wharf.

The third will march along Le Duan, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Nguyen Dinh Chieu, and Dinh Tien Hoang streets and gather at the Hoa Lu Stadium.

The final route will be Le Duan, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and Hai Ba Trung streets, and finish at Le Van Tam Park.

The multiple routes are meant to allow more people to watch the parade and prevent congestion on roads. For those unable to watch in person, the parade will be broadcast live on television and social media.

Besides, 20 giant screens will be put up on streets such as Le Duan, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and Nguyen Hue to enable wide public access.

The parade will begin with a 21-gun salute to the Vietnamese national anthem.

The Air Defense – Air Force Service will fly Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters, Yak-130 fighter aircraft and Su-30MK2 jets in an aerial display.

The Ministry of National Defense is set to soon send official invitations to leaders of its Chinese, Lao and Cambodian counterparts to attend a ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the national reunification (April 30, 1975 – 2025) and to send their military personnel to join commemorative military and civilian parade.

Deputy Minister of National Defense Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien unveiled the information while receiving defense attachés of the three countries in Hanoi on Tuesday morning.

He told the officers that Vietnam is ramping up preparations for this important political event. The country always remembers support for its revolutionary cause from international friends, particularly China, Laos, and Cambodia, Chien affirmed.

The Deputy Minister noted that the Vietnamese defense ministry is looking forward to the participation of the three counterparts, which would contribute to the celebration’s overall success and demonstrate solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and its three neighboring countries.

In recent years, Vietnam has increasingly promoted defense cooperation with the three nations across fields, notably in delegation exchanges, military training and collaboration, and border defense friendship exchange.

The defense attaches said that they will promptly report to their respective authorities and provide relevant recommendations to advance the initiatives outlined by the deputy minister.

Come and joint us to get visa to Vietnam so that you can enjoy this significant parade. We’re always here to assist you with smooth and hassle-free processes.
